Administrative HistoryA unique accumulation of documents, photographs and ephemera relating to the Anfield Bicycle Club. The club was formed in March 1879 and is still thriving today. Also known as ‘The Black Anfielders’ due to the black uniform they originally adopted, the club pioneered long distance cycling and is still home to the oldest surviving cycling event, the annual 100 mile time trial.
In 2013, the club was awarded a Heritage Lottery Fund grant, which enabled them to digitise a vast amount of the clubs historic material with the support of Cheshire Archives and Local Studies. The final stage of this project was the development of the club website and digital archive which can be found at http://www.anfieldbc.co.uk/ . Two club volunteers were responsible for cataloguing and packaging the original records, which were then passed to Cheshire Archives and Local Studies for conservation and safekeeping.
The collection includes information on cycling pioneers and club members, the impact of the First and Second World Wars on cycling, and the changing conditions since 1879 affecting cycling and cyclists particularly in Cheshire, Lancashire, the North of England, the Welsh borders and North Wales. The archive provides a unique primary source for social, sports, and war historians, and anyone interested in local history and cycling.
